Re: Microsoft Sharepoint

Hi Brian,

Sharepoint comes in at least two flavors: Sharepoint and Sharepoint =
Portal services. Sharepoint is actually a free software and you pay for =
Portal. The latter has extra features. We have been using Sharepoint =
for a few years now and it integrates fully with Active Directory (our =
database of user accounts) for permissions and email integration.

I have found it a great resource for the tech minded and to a degree the =
not so tech savvy. It excels at document management with very good =
document version control available. It also has something called =
workspaces that integrates with Microsoft Exchange's event/appointment =
tools to create an online web space to accumulate notes, documents, etc. =
about a meeting.

Unfortunately, the learning curve is a bit too steep for my users at the =
moment. In today's era of wikis, blogs, nings, Google docs, and other =
web 2.0 tools, it falls short for where it should be in terms of =
simplicity and configurability. Keep in mind that I have been using it =
far in advance of the genesis of any of these tools mentioned.

I purchased the Portal version last year, but have yet to implement. My =
main reason for the purchase was the inability of the standard version =
to be backed up at a granularity that allowed a single document to be =
restored if deleted rather than the entire database.

Cheers,
m

and how sophisticated we as users=A0need to be to take advantage of all =
the functionality.=A0 Thanks
