Re: Questions about Laptop/Tablet programs

We are in the second year of our laptop program, now to grades 6 and 7. Lik=
e
Castilleja, we follow Harker's model of "Y'all come." Tablets are too
expensive and rare here to mandate for families. We do provide a netbook fo=
r
our financial aid students, but one of the key considerations of the model
is that parents should be able to buy an off-the-shelf computer and not be
required to install additional software for school use. (As soon as we
provide software that they are required to install, we would become
responsible for fixing their machines--I intend to avoid that morass.)
Student laptops are essentially outside of our network so we don't have
those security concerns although we do authenticate them on wireless.
Students print by uploading their files to our printing website. We have ru=
n
sessions on how parents can install parental controls, so the level of
control is up to the parent.

We also avoid the whole Mac/PC wars as students bring what they
wish--although I must say that trying to help a student troubleshoot a
computer that has a Korean OS can be a bit challenging.
