Re: supplementing TERC Investigations (K-5 mathematics)

Hi Terry - we are using everyday math and we have begun supplementing=0D
some more core materials into our curriculum. =0D

In particular, we've implemented a "summer bridges" math skills workbook=0D
for grades 2-5 and a math problem set for grades 6-12. The aim is to=0D
keep fresher those skills that are so rusty come September. =0D
=0D
During the year, as I said, we're supplementing with core skills sets.=0D
It is early yet in our supplementing but it seems we're making headway.=0D
We haven't had to stop the constructivist stuff as having the basics=0D
more readily accessible seems to allow more time on task. For example,=0D
sometimes they get stuck on the wrong part of the puzzle - like on 6x7=0D
instead of thinking about what area is or means. If 6x7 comes a little=0D
more fluently then they can spend that mental math time working out the=0D
more interesting bits. =0D

Thinking mathematically requires access to all kinds of opportunities.=0D
I do think it is a legitimate pursuit to seek the balance between drill=0D
and skill and conceptual, constructivist experiences.=0D
