Re: Query - parent Education on Social Networking (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace)

In conjunction with our Dean of Students, I've met with groups of
parents to talk about social networking. I do a presentation (which
I've done at a number of other schools) that begins with talking about
the tools and what they are (since there are still a number of parents
who have never seen any of these tools), and then I talk about why they
are of value to the kids (and to us as well). We also tell parents what
we are doing on campus (assemblies, policies, documentation) to address
the use of social networking with students and faculty. Finally we ask
the parents to partner with us in learning (themselves) about the tools
so they can build a vocabulary with which to open discussions about
(safe and appropriate) use with their kids. The most compelling links I
have found are videos about why students use them and about
cyberbullying, and research on how to speak to students effectively
about internet safety. The first one is my favorite. - Vi

Take a look at http://www.edsocialmedia.com. We had them to our school =20
(The Montclair Kimberley Academy) for a social media bootcamp in =20
February and the day was extremely successful. There were a number of =20
other school in attendance as well (30-40 people).

The bootcamp focused on using the social media tools in schools. From =20
Twiiter to Facebook to podcast to blogs. They were extremely helpful =20
and I can't recommend what they do, the resources they online and the =20
level of help.
