Re: MS Scheduling: Extra Help Options

Back a number of years ago, Milton Academy's middle school had
something called "Supervised Study". One period per day was designated
as "SS" which meant that all the classes in the middle school were
supposed to have a study hall during the first 25 minutes of that
period. Therefore all MS teachers were available for help at that
time. The SS time varied each day so every class was affected once a
week. I really like the idea in theory - as a teacher, I could observe
my students studying; you could ask students to do your assignment
during that time occasionally if you wanted to make sure the
assignments weren't taking too long, students could go see other
teachers. In practice, there were some issues - some teachers wouldn't
give SS to their students, some teachers disliked losing class time,
many teachers also taught in the US so they weren't necessarily free,
and because it was a large campus, half of SS could be spent going to
and from another building.
However, it is a creative use of time, and as I said, I liked it and
the kids liked it.
Just an idea to throw into the pot.
