or about three years now.
Our solution is a kludge, but it works.
We have a single computer run the CD. The audio goes out to a splitter box.=
(My word, not the official name for it. I don't know what it's called. ) T=
his device has 8 headphone jacks coming off of it. I plug up to 8 extension=
cords into this box. Each laptop has a headset/mic with the mic plugged in=
to the laptop and the headset plugged into this 8-box splitter. They HEAR w=
hat's coming from the single CD player, they RECORD their own voice onto th=
eir own computer using Audacity. They then export the files to MP3s for the=
AP Board.
I know that you can get 12-jack splitters. You could also daisy chain these=
together so that you'd get more. Cost is relatively small. I don't know al=
l the costs off the top of my head, but our whole system couldn't have cost=
more than $50. It works well. The only problem is that the kids don't have=
any sort of sound proofing, so they hear one another. The discomfort that =
goes along with hearing everyone else and not being distracted by it is sim=
ply a matter of practice. They get over it after the first try.

One other item that is related ---the audio lab downstairs works very well
for the taping of our AP exams and allows us to make tapes of all our
students at the end of the year as part of our final assessment. At some
point in the future, I can see the AP requiring digital recordings of the
AP languages exams. We currently still have a choice of format. We need
to be thinking of a way in which we can administer the AP exam digitally
to a number of students simultaneously and for them to record within the
parameters of the AP guidelines (all facing the same direction, separated
from each other physically in some fashion). There may be a way to do
this with our laptops without having to have a digital lab--because there
you are talking big bucks. I will do some research to see how schools
that record the students digitally do it. In the short/long run, we
should realize the importance of the downstairs lab and not make any plans
to dismantle it. The upstairs lab (Room 148) can be replaced by online
programs/laptops. There is no replacement yet for the recording
possibilities offered by the downstairs lab.=20
