Re: A couple of questions

We've had power problems on our campus for years. For some unknown reason,
the area our campus (Nashville, TN) is in is incredibly prone to lightning
strikes. We blow a 2-3 power supplies each month (+300 computers).

I talked to the electrical contractor I deal with, and he suggested getting
a little tester to test the outlets when power supplies blow. It's not
unheard of to have grounds wired incorrectly. So I found a $4 tester at Hom=
e
Depot. If we find wiring problems, we have them corrected.

I asked about some kind of campus-wide protection and he steered me away
from it due to cost and complexity. He suggested going with a APC Back-UPS
ES series (or similar) unit for each computer, and that would do the trick.
It's just enough to protect them through a surge if we have a lightning
strike.

Our machines that are on those units seem to do fine, it's the other ones
that have problems. So I'm steadily trying to bring in more of the ES serie=
s
units. The cost is reasonable and they are working out fine for us.
