Questions about recovering a stolen laptop

Hi,
I am wondering about how other schools recover their stolen laptops, and
their experiences in such endeavor.

My experience:
This summer, I found that one of our laptops from our cart was missing. I
was able to perform an internal investigation by using the Macbook=B9s own
camera to take pictures of the culprit as well as capture their IP address.
With the headshots we captured, we were able to identify the person and hav=
e
the laptop returned in a private matter.

Since the IP address is good only with a home address to associate it with,
the camera was also used to help identify the thief. This way, we could
avoid a police investigation that involved judges, lawyers, and police.

Questions:
1. If the laptops was stolen property, what rights does the person have to
privacy? What if the person is a minor, would that make any difference?

2. What if the camera took pictures of the minor and the minor was
underdressed? Just delete the pictures?

3a. What procedures or policies do you have when it comes to recovering a
laptop?

3b. How did you design your procedures that would best protect the...
...school from lawsuits and parents
...faculty from being wrongly accused of hatred of student
...students from being wrongly accused

5. What software do you use to recover your stolen laptops? We used JAMF
Casper Suite & Orbicule Undercover.
