Re: Netbooks

We have been using since August 2008 thirty one asus eeepc. We have 21 on a
cart for the 6 and 7 graders. They were supposed to be used by the two
English teachers. Slowly other teachers are learning how to appreciate them.
We have 10 at the lower school.

They were set with xp pro so the students can log onto the domain, save
their files on the file server, print to the printer which is sitting on top
of the cart, surf the web, etc.

I just asked the teachers how they feel about them. They told me that the
students complained about them for about a week but the whining quickly
stopped. The students like them. The teachers appreciate the fact that they
are small enough that a book or a notebook can be on the student desk at the
same time that the laptop is in use. They like the fact that there is a
printer on top of the kart so the student do not have to leave the room.

At the lower school (3rd and 4Th grades) more and more teachers want to use
them.

We are planning on buying more but not necessarily the asus.

We are looking at the possibility of getting a set of netbooks for each
grade 1-5. We have been testing various models and brands with students and
teachers in each grade. Our teachers in the grades 3-5 are extremely excited
to use these and believe they'll fit perfectly into the classroom and
curriculum. Our 1st and 2nd grade teachers are a little more hesitant
because they think the netbooks are a little too small and these students
would have trouble grasping the small screen/keyboard.

I'm curious if anyone else has been using/testing netbooks in the 1-5
environment. If so, what discoveries have been made regarding these age
groups and netbook?

We (EdisonLearning, formerly Edison Schools my current employer) are also
evaluating the Netbooks so I am very interested in this thread, plus
interested in the 1-to-1 angle. Anyone test the Dell Mini, I think it's
either 10 or 11 inches?
