Re: QUERY- Middle School Final Exams

1) Do you administer final exams at the end of the year? Yes, to grades 7
and 8, not 6. In grade 7, students take "quarter finals" in Science and
World Language, not final exams. 7th grade does take real 90 minute finals
in English, Social Studies, and Math. 8th grade takes exams in all 5
solid subjects, also 90 minutes.

2) Are there specific guidelines for exam format? content?
Lots of suggestions made to teachers. If several teachers teach the same
course, they must consult one another and give similar exams.

3) What does your schedule look like on final exam days? Do students only
come for their exams and then go home? Do you design a special day for
them?
We have a 7-12 exam schedule. Morning starts late, ca. 9:40 am, exam
period is 2 hours. MS students have some review time and then take a 90 minute
exam. US students use whole 2 hours. Then we have a 1 hour break
followed by a second 2 hour period. This works well for us. We moved to the
later time to avoid a parking problem one year, and everyone liked it! So we
keep it. School normally starts at 8 am for us. We have the library open
for students who come on the school buses -- we see lots of collaborative
study for exams before school starts. Exam schedule runs 4 days including
conflict/make-up time.

All best, Margaret Bowles, Viewpoint School
