Re: faculty and texting

I have to agree with Keith. We spend a great deal of time and resources eng=
ineering policies regarding devices and practices that will likely have sho=
rt half-lives and ultimately morph into something else. Thus, we end up cha=
sing the tail of technological developments creating a perpetual atmosphere=
of "prevention of the week." While I am sensitive to those who feel overwh=
elmed by some of these devices and practices, and therefore compelled to re=
spond with a policy, in a perfect world, I would wish for a different strat=
egy. Why not commit the time and resources to defining what your school is,=
and what the standards of behavior are, in the most general sense (attorne=
ys love general statements because it is more difficult to identify excepti=
ons)? Then texting, inappropriate use of Facebook, or other questionable be=
haviors in a school context become conversations about why those actions ar=
e not consistent with the school's standards of behavior. Some might argue =
that this will be an ineffective approach because it has no teeth. I wonder=
how effective it would be, alternatively, to catalog a litany of those too=
ls and practices that are prohibited?

My thought is why do we need to have a policy for everything? We are trying
to encourage our faculty to use these devices in the first place.

Please keep this open too - we are needing to write a policy for this
topic this summer. I have some thoughts if anyone is interested, but
not a detailed policy.
