Re: Laptop Internet Security

Tim,

I am waiting for an 8e6 demo unit to arrive shortly for some configuration =
testing. I'll defer to the educators and administrators on the list to add=
ress your question about moral and legal responsibility for filtering servi=
ces in a 1:1 environment. As a tech guy I will focus on what I have implem=
ented and hope to update you after my evaluation of the 8e6 product is comp=
lete in October.

I just finished an installation of a SmoothWall Guardian appliance for a sc=
hool in CA. This hardware device filters for their 70 LAN desktops and the=
SmoothWall Mobile Guardian client software is installed on their 60 netboo=
ks. The Mobile Guardian client uses the same filtering settings as the har=
dware device when the laptop is off of the campus network. Authentication =
is against Active Directory. Logs are kept and uploaded to the hardware de=
vice when connected to the LAN for report viewing. It is browser dependent=
so care must be taken to ensure students are limited in their ability to b=
ypass the filter.

Pros:
Great customer support
Very granular filtering options
Great value for the money

Cons:
Administrator interface is busy (lots there to get lost in)
Only filters HTTP and HTTPS traffic (Would like NIC adapter filtering)

I am happy to share more technical details off list with anyone.

I am interested to learn what others have had success with.

Cheers,

Subject: Laptop Internet Security

Hello all-

=20

We just deployed a 1 to 1 laptop program at our school for middle and
upper school students. Our school has purchased the laptops so they are
not owned by the students. However, we still allow them to take them
home. Here are my questions. Are we responsible for internet filtering
at home while the student uses our machines? (legally/morally) Does
anyone use filtering software that sits on the client machines? Has
anyone heard of, or is anyone using the 8e6 mobile client for their web
filtering?

Thanks for your time,

Tim Smith
