Tons of textbooks vs e-Reader

I have a colleague who has an idea that deserves some consideration. Have
any schools given thought toward replacing textbooks with e-Reader devices
and .pdf textbooks. It is common to find middle and upper school student
backpacks in excess of 60 pounds. Add to this their laptop case and
athletic gear and schools are literally breaking the backs of their
students. Any thoughts, comments, or ideas would be appreciated.
