Re: Audio recording of board meetings

Dave,

At one school we contracted with a sound engineer to create cassette tapes
of the board meetings which were then handed directly to the secretary at
the end of the meeting. I know cassettes are old technology, but the board
was very concerned about privacy and that was the best medium for the
secretary to transcribe from. He used an array of mikes strategically placed
around the room, then run through a mixer.

I think the setup that's best for you will depend on many factors, including
the reverberence of the room, how many board members there are and how they
are arranged, etc. For example, if everyone is around a large table you
could use a boudary mike (PZM) or two in the middle. You might find it
challenging to do this wirelessly, since the wireless mikes I've seen tend
to be good for one or two people rather than a large group.

There are a variety of hand-held digital recorders available which are
reasonably priced. Some have mikes built in. I've used the Marantz PMD660
with good success. I like the Sony VP88 stereo mike for live recording, but
it would be overkill for recording a board meeting.

You might find that it would be cost-effective in the long run to consult
with an AV vendor either just for the equipment, or to do the recording for
you.
