Re: PE - Heart Rate Monitors

I teach a Spinning (cycling) class at a local fitness. Spinning as a certification emphasizes the use of heart rate monitors. See below for answers to your questions.

Subject: PE - Heart Rate Monitors

I am trying to implement the use of Heart Rate monitors in our high school
physical education classes (9th and 10th grade), and I was hoping I could
get some words of advice from people who have been using them.

1. What brand do you use?
**** I use Polar and Sigma Sport. Polar is expensive. I use simple ones that give me heart rate, average over a time period and High mark.

Currently, I am looking at Polar, but I have
heard of another brand (Sunnto, I think?). Does anyone have experience
using either of these, and if so what do you think of them? Or, does
anyone have experience using another brand?

2. Does anyone have experience writing grant proposals to request funding
for heart rate monitors?
*** You might right to different manufactures or fitness and see if they would sponsor.

3. In what ways do you use the monitors in your curriculum? Is it all or
most of it, does it supplement your curriculum, do you use them every day?

*** From my view I would use them to teach the various heart rate zones and how to use these zones for better health. You may also want to do a co-curricular project with the science dept.

4. Do your sports teams use them, and if so, how?
**** Track team or any team that is interested in endurance should be interested.

5. If you are using software with them, how do you like it? Do you find
the software useful?
**** The high end HR's come with software. Nike and Apple have teamed up to records data I think.

As a general note some fitness clubs may be interested working with you to develop a program

Thanks so much for your help with any and/or all of these questions!

Sincerely,

Bri Brown
