Week-long Modeling Workshops - Biology, Chemistry, and Physics

Good morning Science and Math Teachers,

Shady Side Academy will again be offering its incredibly popular
Modeling Workshops. This year, we will be offering four workshops:

Modeling Instruction in Physics I: Energy and Constant Velocity (June
22-26th)
Modeling Instruction in Physics II: Energy and Constant Velocity (June
29-July 3rd)
Modeling Instruction in Chemistry (June 22-26th)
Modeling Instruction in Biology (June 22-26th)

9:00am 4:30pm, daily (Friday Session: 9:00am-1pm)

All of our workshops were at or near capacity last year, so early
registration is encouraged. The costs is $595 per person. Additional
teachers from the same school district or PAISTA school teachers receive
a 10% discount. Workshop fee includes handouts, materials, daily
snacks, lunch, and entertainment. Act 48 Credit is available.

Feel free to check out our promotional brochure (

also added more information about the courses below.

Take care,

Lead Instructor:

Dr. Kathy Malone is the lead mentor for all of our summer workshops.
Initially trained as a national leader for Modeling Physics at Arizona
State University from 1985-1987, Dr. Malone has been conducting
workshops in Modeling Instruction in Physics since 1988, and also was
trained in Modeling Chemistry during the summer of 2005. She has trained
teachers in all parts of the country from first year modeling courses to
advanced modeling. She has taught physics and chemistry in public and
private schools for over twenty years in Louisiana, Ohio, and
Pennsylvania. Kathy holds a bachelor degree from the University of New
Orleans and master degrees from the University of New Orleans and
Carnegie Mellon University. She received her doctoral degree in
cognition and physics education from Carnegie Mellon in 2005.

What:

Modeling Instruction in Physics was recognized in 2000 by the U.S.
Department of Education as one of the seven best K-12 educational
technology programs out of 134 programs evaluated. Modeling Instruction
is grounded on the notion that true scientific inquiry is centered on
the construction, validation, and application of conceptual models that
allow us to organize our understanding of the physical world. The
Modeling Method corrects many weaknesses of the traditional
lecture-demonstration method, including fragmentation of knowledge,
student passivity, and persistence of naive beliefs about the physical
world. Unlike the traditional approach, in which students wade through
an endless stream of seemingly unrelated topics, the Modeling Method
organizes the course around a small number of scientific models, thus
making the course coherent.
