Re: MS Scheduling: Extra Help Options

We have a 6-day schedule with 3 rotating 90-minute blocks per day and class=
es meeting every other day. Before school, we have a 10 minute check-in/ad=
visory. After the first 90 minute block, we have an X period we currently =
use for advisory (Responsive Classroom/Developmental Designs), assembly, ac=
tivities, class meetings, etc. After the 2nd block, we have lunch/music/st=
udy rotations. In 6th grade, most students have daily workstudy with advis=
ory/advisors. In 7th & 8th grade, most students have workstudy at least 3x=
weekly for 30 or 60 minutes. This is followed by a 3rd academic block.

During workstudies, students frequently meet with their teachers for assist=
ance. Sometimes it's 1-1. Sometimes it's small group. More needy student=
s have scheduled meetings with individual teachers during workstudy or befo=
re/after school. All students are encouraged to seek out teachers as neede=
d. Ideally, this habit, explicitly taught in middle school, carries over t=
o upper school.

Because we have a block schedule, many of our academic classes have "indepe=
ndent work" time built in. This gives students and teachers more flexibili=
ty for small group and 1-1 work than we'd have a in a traditional 45 minute=
period.
