New Graduates Find Mentors Online

New graduate nurses can now make a
smooth transition from nursing school
to the bedside simply by logging on.

An online mentoring program offered
by the Academy of Medical-Surgical
Nurses (AMSN) is helping new nurses
discover mentors through electronic
communication, such as e-mail and
chat rooms.

The initiative is part of AMSN's
hospital-based "Nurses Nurturing Nurses"
mentoring program, which aims to help
new nurses develop personally and
professionally. The new online
component allows for more efficient
communication between the mentee and
mentor who often have busy schedules.
To participate, mentees must have
less than two years of professional
nursing experience and be an AMSN
member.

Studies have found when nurses are
mentored during the early-and often
most critical-stages of their career,
they tend to stay at their place of
work longer.
