Re: Understanding by Design

We've been a pretty UbD-inspired shop for a while, and in the last couple
of years we've been doing quite a lot of work on assessment that relates
to Grant Wiggins' more recent work.

You might contact our Assistant Head, Rob Connor. He has been leading this
work of late. rconnor@bcdschool.org

Like any initiative, the challenge is to bring change to people's practice
without either overwhelming them or making them feel as though all their
prior work has been somehow inadequate. Good teachers tend to have figured
out UbD-like approaches to things on their own, but developing some shared
understandings of methodology, aims, and language can help a faculty leap
foward (toward backwards planning?) with a sense of shared purpose and
energy.

I've got a kind of super-sized UbD planning template that I have used in
our teacher orientation work over the years. I would pass this along to
anyone who wanted to contact me off-list.

Hope this helps--Peter Gow
