Re: bullying policies

We are still working on this but here is a draft...

HARASSMENT, HAZING, FIGHTING, AND BULLYING
Hamden Hall seeks to be a community in which every individual is treated
with sensitivity and respect. Every member of the community has the righ=
t
to work, to learn, and to grow in an environment of support, tolerance,
and sensitivity to our differences, especially those based on race, ethni=
c
origin, religion, gender, and sexual orientation. This environment must b=
e
free from verbal, physical, and psychological intimidation or harassment.
Behavior that disregards the self-esteem of others and that is uninvited
and unwanted is considered harassment.=20

Harassment which takes place on or off campus, over the telephone, throug=
h
the mail, or via electronic means (e-mail, text messages, instant
messaging, on social networking sites, Facebook groups, etc.) will be
considered most serious offenses. Physical confrontations are a violation
of the School=92s policy. Slapping, hitting, and/or punching will not be
tolerated. Bullying of another student, such as intentionally
threatening, harassing, intimidating or taunting, will not be tolerated.

In an electronic environment harassing behavior includes, but it is not
limited to: creating and posting offensive remarks; creating offensive
groups on social networking sites, giving files, folders or disks
offensive names; modifying system messages, alert sounds, etc. in a way
that might offend or annoy; and, in general, using any aspect of the
technology in a way that hurts others.

Hazing is strictly prohibited. Hazing is any conduct or method of
initiation into any student organization, whether on or off campus, which
willfully or recklessly endangers the physical or mental health of any
student or other person or behavior that is intended, or should reasonabl=
y
be expected, to have the effect of humiliating, intimidating, or demeanin=
g
the student. Hazing also includes soliciting, directing, aiding, or
otherwise participating actively or passively in such acts. Hazing occurs
regardless of the consent or willingness of a person to participate in th=
e
activity.

The possession of any weapons, tools, or objects to threaten the
well-being of others (including firearms, knives, etc.) poses a severe
threat to the safety of the entire community. The School administration
reserves the right to summarily suspend or dismiss a student for an
offense which endangers life or health, or poses a special threat to any
member of our School community. =20

Harassment and Sexual Harassment include, but are not limited to, the
following types of behaviors: =09
=B7 Derogatory or discriminatory remarks or gestures. =09
=B7 Display of sexually explicit, offensive, or demeaning materials suc=
h
as photographs, cartoons, or calendars.
=B7 Slang names or labels that others find offensive.
=B7 Obscene or suggestive gestures, remarks, innuendoes, or jokes.
=B7 Inappropriate personal questions or remarks about a person=92s clot=
hing,
body, or sexuality.
=B7 The posting or publishing on the internet of demeaning materials as
defined above, including remarks, innuendos, or jokes as described
above.
=B7 Unnecessary or suggestive touching.
=B7 Unwelcome sexual advances or requests for sexual favors.
=B7 Verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature.
Engaging in any of these behaviors constitutes harassment. Behaviors that
would constitute dating violence such as threats or use of physical,
sexual, verbal or emotional abuse will also be subject to disciplinary
action.=20

Complaint Procedure: Any person who believes he/she is a victim of
harassment, sexual harassment,~hazing, or bullying, or has wtnessed a cas=
e
of harassment, sexual harassment, hazing, or bullying, is encouraged to
issue (directly or through a parent) a verbal or written complaint to any
of the following individuals: Head of School, Division Head, Dean of
Students, Advisor, School Nurse, Academic Dean, or Curriculum Coordinator.
A senior administrator will report back to the reporter that Hamden Hall
will or will not conduct an investigation. The actual results and/or
findings of any investigation will be handled appropriately and may not b=
e
reported back to the original reporter. Any retaliatory acts to or towar=
d
a reporter must be reported immediately.=20
