Stacey - you might want to take a look at netbooks. We are going to be using some of the Lenovo Ideabooks next year in our middle school. They have smaller keyboards and screens than conventional laptops but also weigh less. They seem to run most
programs well. And the good news is that they list under $500. Asus and Classmate also offer netbook models, including two announced in January that include tablet features.
