STill looking at netbook possibilities, and seems many netbooks come
with Win XP Home. I've had trouble networking the Home edition before.

Something just occurred to me regarding any supposed cost-savings. I
know
that at least for our school, we still have licenses for many copies of
older versions of Office (both Mac and Windows) that still work, but
just
aren't the latest and greatest. So the only cost-savings would result
from
not upgrading those versions.
But now the question arises of what we do about those old versions. Do
we
start publicizing now that starting in the 2009-10 school year we'll
only be
supporting OpenOffice on the student computers and make the already paid
for
Microsoft product go away? Do we announce that we'll only be *teaching*
OpenOffice, but the older versions of Office will still be available on
the
computers for as long as they'll still run? Is there some third way that
I
haven't thought of?
And, by the way, it's my understanding here that we're only talking
about
savings from using OpenOffice on *student* computers, and that faculty
and
staff members who need and use all the extra bells and whistles
available in
the Microsoft product would still have it available on their computers.
