Like many of the people here, this is a great thread --
I put some ideas together over on my blog: http://funnymonkey.com/back-to-basics
I tried getting these ideas together to respond on list, but there were some basic formatting issues that got in the way of a text-based response -- in short, the utility of hyperlinks and formatting made the blog a better choice than email.
And maybe I've been spending too much time thinking about this thread, but the decision to put my ideas down on my blog instead of listserv/email format seem somehow relevant to this thread.
