The "Leadership Trap"

There is an online discussion going on right now that I wanted to make
this group aware of involving the new work of Dr. Jerome Murphy. This
work focuses on the "leadership trap" and connects to a courageous
piece on "the pain of leadership" (a chapter for Out-of-the-box
Leadership, edited by Paul D. Houston et al., 2006). An introduction
to "the leadership trap" is on the [Harvard GSE website ([
http://gseweb.harvard.edu/ ]http://gseweb.harvard.edu/).

Dr. Murphy's goal is to foster a discussion about the real
psychological tension and pain that can weigh on us as leaders. His
ideas, candor, and openness resonate with me. Will it for you too? I
believe this is an important dialog, and I hope the thoughts and
insights of independent school community will be well represented. To
learn more, go onto the Harvard GSE site and click the "read more
button" at the bottom of the "leadership trap" blurb. If you feel
moved to add your voice to the discussion, add a comment (it will post
the following day).

For those of you who may not be familiar with his work, Dr. Jerome
Murphy is the Harold Howe II Professor of Education and dean emeritus
of the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He has worked over the
past several decades to explore difficult and often personally
challenging aspect of leadership. I had the privilege of studying
with him several years ago. He is one of the most caring,
introspective, and authentic teachers and leaders that I have met.

Thanks,
-Ari
