Laptop machines

Hi - we're looking at adding more laptop carts to our middle school.
I've been thinking that there has to be a smaller, sleeker machine for
this kind of use. Most of the time carts are used to have students
access information, do some writing, get to a web-based activity. They
also have some software such as Inspiration and the MS office suite on
them.

What kind of machines are up and coming? It seems that i-phones do
nearly all of these things! There has to be something between the G3
handhelds and the full-blown laptop (the vast majority of which seems to
go unused...)

All best and thanks for your replies
