Re: Article in NYT about on-line grades and Parents

We also use PCR and have had great success with the parent portal.
Usernames and passwords are, of course, an issue at times, but our
parents seem to enjoy real time access and I don't get reports from
teachers that parents are more concerned about grades or more abusive of
teachers about grades than before. That being said, we are several years
into an online option for parents. We started with GradeQuick and Edline
with a weekly update of grades and assignments. And we are in our second
year of PCR. We still give teachers an option to update weekly and I
guess our parents are trained now.

I am currently knocking on my wooden desk for as sure as I'm sitting
here, if I send this, I'll get a parent complaint within 24 hours. ;-)

Hi Larry,

We're actually just deploying this now, through PCR. We've started with
a
"beta" release to about 8 families (out of 50) to help us work out some
of
the snags, including some of those mentioned in the article.

I certainly worry about parental abuse, but we're putting together a
package
of materials for our parents, with the help of the beta testers, to help
educate them about its use, as well as a 'demo" at our first parent
supper
in the fall, when we release it to our whole community.

Bottom line though, for me, is that it helps - immensely - especially
with
that group of kids who legitimately struggle with executive functioning.
For
them, it takes closed loops all around, and this helps do that.

As with anything, there will be those who abuse and those who use
wisely.

In peace,
