Re: video game creation...

I've heard of teachers that use flash. With younger students, the
teacher could building the functionality of the game and then have the
students work on design (drawing the spaceships, lasers, etc).

While it's not a video game, our younger students have really enjoyed
composed animated shorts with www.xtranormal.com. The site is very
flexible and allows you to create characters, type dialogue and then see
the scene immediately.
