Re: Laptop Security software

Hi Bruce,

For the Mac, we had a situation with a missing laptop.

Inexpensive: Orbicule Undercover.
http://www.orbicule.com/undercover/
They have a volume license for education ($10/100 computers). It was
cheaper than CompuTrace ($50+/3 years). This has a lot of the same features
as the CompuTrace.

JAMF Casper Suite (Mac Mgmt Tool): (~$17/computer/year)
This is not a laptop recovery tool because it was made to be a Mac mgmt tool
(Altiris for the Mac essentially). The notebook calls home every once in a
while to look for policy changes or updates. We can acquire the IP address,
and contact the police in this matter. In our situation, we were able to
have the laptop take images of the user instead, and use it to get our
laptop back. This software already paid for itself. :)

Open Source: Adeona

We use both Orbicule and Casper. Sometimes we don't go for free solutions,
but really inexpensive solutions that won't break our budget.
