Re: Outsourcing email for free?

We currently use the Google Docs feature widely in maintaining chainging =
information that needs to be shared real-time amongst people throughout =
our district. It has been a fantastic tool that is easy to use. And as =
you say, it's free. At this point, students are not using it. I fear =
that the traffic of its wide use would wreak a little havoc on our =
network. I know that, for me personally, when my browser times out its =
session with Google Docs, it will continue to ask for a connection, =
spilling out constant traffic. If schools want to start using online file =
sharing and collaborative work spaces, they will have to think about the =
network bandwidth required to allow this to seamlessly happen.

Friends,

There is an interesting article in "The Chronicle of Higher Education",
Jan. 11, 2008, headlined "Colleges Get Out of E-Mail Business" (sorry
it's not a free link). It says more than 1000 colleges have signed up
with either Google Apps Education Edition or Microsoft Live@edu and
turned over their entire email operations to these companies for free.
In many cases, this was prompted by student requests who saw these
services as more convenient, more spacious (5 gigabytes of server space
per person), and did I mention FREE? Colleges that use these services
may continue to use their institutional names including the ".edu."
Online calendars and collaborative work spaces allow students to
collaborate and coordinate. =20

Have any of you considered doing or already done this?
