We are in the process of finalizing our plan. We have enlisted the help
of the safety officer of our local police department. He has been
terrific. He came to our school for a walk-through and then gave me a
list of suggestions and also prepared a power point presentation to be
given to the faculty. He will be presenting it sometime next month.
The officer requested a floor plan of our building and then downloaded
on to the computers in each police patrol car for ready reference if
needed. Recently, one evening (after 6:00 pm) we hosted the emergency
response team on campus. They familiarized themselves with our building
and did some training based on different possible scenarios. I would
definitely suggest tapping into the local police to help come up with
your plan since each school structure and surrounding environment is
different.
We also used the School Administrator Procedures: Responding to
Critical Incidents manual provide by the New Jersey Department of
Education, Office of Educational Support Services School Security Unit.
It comes with a CD and was very helpful.
Good luck with your plan.

Subject: School "lockdown" procedures
All --
I am developing a set of regrettable, but necessary, "lockdown"
procedures for our K-8 and early childhood campuses, in the event of
someone coming on campus to do harm to students/teachers. =20
Both campuses are urban and have permeable perimeters -- walls/fences,
but scalable -- and our classrooms, which have been designed to let in
maximum light, are therefore, of course, highly exposed to the outside.
If your school has "lockdown" procedures that you'd be willing to share
with me off-list, I'd be very grateful.
Best,
Mitch
