Re: Department Leaders/Chairs

Joshua,

I have an Academic Committee made up of Department Chairs, the Director of
College Placement, and Head Librarian. We discuss and decide on topics
ranging from dates for trimester exams to dropping or adding classes to the
schedule. However, I am also a great believer in what one may call the
"race horse" model to team decision-making. In other words, I get my most
innovative, energetic people (race horses) to implement the ideas and/or
policies the Academic Committee and/or I want to see implemented. Decisions
based on consensus or by committees can be slow and often convoluted with
extraneous ideas and initiatives. I think mentoring and allowing the ones
who really want to improve a school culture is the way to go.......
