Re: Opening a new building

Congratulations!!
We opened our new K-5 building at the beginning of last year. It replaced 40
year old "temporary" buildings so it was a great milestone in our school's
history.
We had our ribbon cutting/opening ceremony on our orientation day, the day
before school started. We had the usual speakers, but we were lucky enough
to have a proclamation from our congresswoman read at the ceremony. She also
presented us with a flag that had been raised in D.C. That was a special
touch. We had strictly limited access to the building before the ribbon
cutting so that it was really the first time most of our families had seen
it. That was key in building excitement. We let everyone in to tour after
the ribbon cutting and followed up with a barbecue for everyone. It was a
festive occasion!
We deliberately kept the ribbon cutting out of the first day of school
because we didn't want to step on any child's momentous first day
experience. While we all shared in the new building, we felt the first day
of kindergarten belongs to each child and family.
