> science as a graduation requirement?
I always feel uneasy when schools include the phrases "technology" and
"computer science" in the same sentence. I wish I had a nickel everytime
somebody used the phrase "computer science" when they really meant
"computer stuff." It is critical that the administrators and people with
the power to make decisions and spend money understand the meaning of
"computer science." My favorite quote in this regard is from the late
computer scientist Edsger Dijkstra:
"Computer science is no more about computers than astronomy is about
telescopes."
There is a lot of fuzzy thinking in some schools about technology on the
one hand and computer science on the other. To suggest that either
"technology" or "computer science" would satisfy a graduation requirement
implies that the two concepts are sufficiently close as to warrant
inclusion in the same discussion. I guess I would disagree. Others might
see it differently.
