Re: Website host

I actually still host non-essential and harddrive consuming stuff (movies
and pictures galleries) on my internal server and point the DNS entries to
it so when I reference it I just enter the name
picturesgallore.domain.orgto pull all that stuff. AND your webhosting
provider can help you even with
that if you host your domain with them... (it really easy though if you have
it somewhere else - it is the same concept but I would really catch my ears
if I had to do the DNS thing on my own servers)
Moreover - if you are to use your website to collect analytics and do some
SEO (search engine optimization)... good luck with your vanilla servers. You
could certainly do it but I personally have no clue where to start and
wouldn't even dare try. You can get some help if you host it with a provider
as some might actually be willing to help you out since indirectly you
attract traffic to their servers even if you don't advertise them as your
providers.

As for databases I really do favor the "cloud" computing - I have the school
database serviced by an online database provider: part of the my contract
with them is to have them back it up and provide support to my users. This
way I don't get chased down the hallway each time someone forgets to turn
the caps lock off... Not counting that I can get first class access to it
from wherever I happen to travel that summer...

We are a really small school and unfortunately I have to wear so many hats -
anything that has electrons moving about is in my hat - so it is essential
for me to "delegate" grunt work stuff if I am to focus on academics.
