I am finding this all fascinating as well as extremely helpful. The issue i=
s not just at school, but at home. The real piece is here, as far as I am c=
oncerned, is the parent education about what these gadgets really are. I do=
n't know that the realize that calling them "Phones" is actually a misnomer=
.=20
The conversation started, at our end, when a parent called and asked what=
to do about their child using the parent's phone and doing some rather ina=
ppropriate surfing.

From a filtering perspective the iPhone and iTouch are quite different. Th=
e iTouch only has wi-fi and therefore would be effected by any household (e=
.g. opendns) or school filtering (e.g. websense) on the network. It does n=
ot, however, prevent them from going to the local coffee shop, book store, =
or friends house and using their unrestricted wi-fi. The iPhone's can be f=
iltered on a wi-fi network as well, but they can go on the cellular network=
and bypass any network filtering at any time.
The iPhone and iTouch currently (v2.2.1 OS) have what are called "Restricti=
ons" that restrict explicit content in the iTunes store and allow you to di=
sable the iTunes and App store completely, and turn off the camera, Safari,=
and Youtube browsers. There are a few filtering/tracking programs availabl=
e through the App store for $15-$20 with mixed reviews (iWonder and SafeEye=
s).
Of the current smart phones, I believe the iPhone has the most robust set o=
f controls for parents and they will be increased with the 3.0 release. I =
think the years of keeping computers in the livingroom as a solution to mon=
itoring kids on the internet are coming to an end (iPhone, netbooks, Kindle=
, ubiqutous free wi-fi) and we will all need to invest a little more time i=
n educating the children and more active monitoring.

At TABS this fall, Katherine Koestner covered some of this at one of her
sessions. At that time she indicated that a few phones currently have a
fairly simply filter that parents can apply but that those filters are
pretty easy for kids to work around. The other piece of news she shared
was that all these smart phones are by-passing our school filters, which
has huge ramifications for those of us at boarding school. It made sense
when she said it, but many of us in the room hadn't thought about that
before (We were almost all Res. Life folks and not tech folks).
Ms. Koestner's suggestion was that parents not dish out smart phones to
kids and that schools build technology policies that take this problem
into consideration.

I have parents asking about filters for iphones and itouch . the kids
have figured out that maybe they have filters at home, but are accessing
all kinds of things on the phones. I am having trouble finding
information.
Any help would be appreciated.
