basically) for faculty / classroom support. Typically our desktop tech is =
here earlier, (around 7:30) and I'm here later (until 5 or 5:30). I'm also=
basically on-call 24x7, although that rarely gets exercised. I have a sma=
rtphone for email (who doesn't), and a secured site-to-site VPN between my =
house and the campus, along with Dameware and RDP for remote control should=
something blow up. If things get really ugly, I only live about 12 miles =
from campus.
The best thing you can do in any of these situations is to set your faculty=
's expectations about support, particularly over holidays and weekends, ens=
ure you keep up with your network (reading logs is a big proactive step) an=
d have a solid system monitoring platform in place (we use a combination of=
Nagios, Cacti, and SmokePing).

Subject: Working Hours for Tech/Network Support
What hours do you have your school tech/network support staff come in =20
and leave? We are seeing a growing need for people to be in earlier =20
and stay later. How are you handling the issue?
We've looked at staggering the hours of the staff as one options, but =20
it doesn't always put the right people in the building(s).
Thanks!
