Re: Server room temperature

The temperature of the room is secondary to the temperature at the
server equipment. I have seen plenty of server rooms where the
ambient temperature in the room was 75 degrees or so but the
temperature at the servers is 90 or higher.

Ideally, the temperature of the servers should be between about 70 to
75 degrees (essentially, room temperature). Anything above 85 would
be cause for concern.

The real trick to this is how the servers are racked (assuming they
are rack servers). The tendency is to put servers right on top of
each other in the rack. In real data centers, this is fine because of
the cooling equipment but in local environments, it is sometimes
better to leave 1 U between servers or networking equipment to allow
for adequate ventilation.

One thing to consider, especially if you use managed APC battery
backups, is to invest in APC's rack mounted temperature monitoring
unit. These can be configure to send emails or SNMP alerts if the
temperature goes above a threshold and can even shut servers down if
the ambient temperature gets to high.

Side note for environments using or considering PoE switches for phone
or WAP deployments. PoE switches can run MUCH hotter than standard
switches. Keep that in mind when you are racking the equipment or you
could be replacing some expensive switching far more regularly.
