I think your colleague Bob asked this question over in the g.d.o site at http://groups.drupal.org/node/30160
To recap what I added there, the Filefield module is probably the best solution for this. You can then use taxonomy to organize the content that holds your files; this will both make it easier to search, as well as to display your content in a way that makes sense to people trying to find your content.
I often recommend having two taxonomy structures around this: Grade Level and Type of File -- this allows someone to search (for example) the 5,6, and 7th grades (ie, Grade Level) for Permission slips (type of file) -- it's also worth noting that you can organize online forms and downloadable docs using this method, so people can find both in the same place and use the one that meets their needs the best.
Also, re LDAP integration, we're currently doing some work that allows node-based user profile info to pull from/push to LDAP (ie, LDAP is authoritative) -- we'll be releasing this back on d.o somewhere in the next few months, most likely in late December/early January.
I hope this helps --
Cheers,
Bill

Subject: Drupal file repository question
Hi,
For those of you out there using Drupal, are any of you using a file repository module? We're creating a community portal and would like create pages for our community to upload/download files. This was very easy in Joomla via Remository, but we ran into issues with the way the entire system connected to our LDAP directory. We've read about Alfresco and KnowledgeTree. Both of them seem like great products, but we're concerned that it's overkill for what we want to do. We'd love to have an administrative assistant log into the system and upload a file into a section that only she has access to. On the front end, we would see a folder with an appropriate title and a list the available downloads.
Suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!
Regards,
