Re: Final "exam"

A section of the written exam I gave asked these type of questions:

If you needed to do X, what application would you use.
If you needed to do Y, what application would you use.

Also, in the practical portion, I do not say: Use Word to do X. I say =
do X, and they are required to select what tools to do it with. Each of =
the 6-8 tasks (with the exception of the keyboarding speed and accuracy =
test) could actually be accomplished using more than one tool, and the =
students decided what to use.

It seems to me that the real test of a student's understanding of
technology isn't just what tasks they can perform, but also their =
ability
to use technology in context.

Maybe consider someting like a case study or strategy exercise. I'm
writing this off the top of my head (rarely a good idea), but something
like:
--You need to convey information x, y, or z in this context, what
technologies are the best choice for the task and why?=20
--Or, take one of the following topics and use a technology that you =
think
is the best way to inform your audience about that information?
--Or, you sit down at a desk and have to use a new piece of word
processing software you've never seen before without any assistance. How
do you get started?

It seems to me that these types of tasks are the things our students
really need to be able to do. Much more so than whether they can use
iMovie vs. Movie Maker or PowerPoint vs. PhotoStory (or whatever).
