Re: Weather Station Recommendation

We are using Weatherbug
- Full station (temp, hum, wind speed etc) - no lighting detection
- HD campus camera

Works for over 18 months, no problems. Recent storm in DC and Maryland hand no impact.
Our staff had some fun checking wind speed reading :-) about 50 mph

We installed station by ourselves - saving about $1500. Not a big deal mast from
RadioShack and some hardware from Home Depot - $150

We like this station. Some teachers use it for classes. Weatherbug gives you an access to
their educational web with class materials.

Hi Tami,

When do new faculty receive computers, email accounts, website accounts,
etc.? - As soon as they are hired.=20

Are any of you sending new faculty to technology conferences, such as
the Lausanne Laptop Institute in Memphis to prep for 1:1? - Our teachers
usually choose to attend the national subject area conferences. Funds
are always an issue. We host a Summer Tech Conference each year and many
of our teachers share best practices and teach sessions during this
2-day event.

How much time is spent training teachers on how to access school
resources (network and cloud) via computer? - Most of this has been
moved to our "Orientation Wiki" which includes instructional videos. We
previously spent a few days doing "New Faculty Orientation". We have
found that it is much more effective to focus on showing teachers where
to go to find the answers as the need occurs. Most don't remember how to
add a test to the test calendar until they need to do so. Standard
expectations for teachers now include proficiency with Moodle, DyKnow,
Google Apps, etc and it is a challenge to get new teachers up to speed.
We try to offer a multi-faceted experience depending on the learning
style/preference of the teacher. Teachers help each other, we schedule
individual training, etc. It doesn't happen overnight.

Are things such as classroom management with laptops, student
expectations, etc., part of the discussion? Yes. This is covered again
in a variety of ways. We hold mandatory student/parent meetings before
laptops are issued to make sure we are on the same page with the
expectations piece. We have put together tips for classroom management
and teachers often share during monthly tech meetings or dept meetings.

Is technology proficiency a job requirement? If so, how is it assessed
during the interview process? No. We need to work on this. An assessment
may help but we can usually get strong teachers up to speed
technologically if they have a lifelong learning perspective. Our
directors communicate that fairly well. We have had a 1:1 program for
over 10 years so I think we attract teachers who are excited about using
technology as a tool to enhance instruction.=20

Is ability to effectively integrate technology a job requirement? If
so, how is it assessed during the interview process? Yes. It has taken
years but we finally have integration and incorporation of 21st Century
Skills as part of the yearly teacher evaluation instrument. It makes a
huge difference because it then becomes part of each teachers PDP
(Professional Development Plan) if there is a deficiency.

Good morning,

As we start the new school year, I was hoping to do a quick survey
(happy to share results if asked) about how schools with laptop programs
prep new faculty. I realize it's too late to help most of us for this
school year, but as many of us have a handful of new faculty starting in
the next few weeks, it seemed a good idea to discuss while it's fresh so
we can plan accordingly for next summer.

Re: Combining Different Levels of French

In my experience as a French teacher and department head, EVERY upper
level class is a mixed class. Regardless of what they've all been
exposed to, by the time learners get to their 3rd year or so, the
actual syntactic and lexical acquisition is all over the map. The
challenge in combining levels is largely one of perception. Students
at the "lower" levels will feel lost as soon as you introduce material
with any structures or vocabulary that they haven't covered. Students
at the "upper" level will of course object to covering grammar
structures that they've already seen (never mind whether they actually
"acquired" the material or not). But of course, you'll also get this
effect when you combine students at the same level who've been with
different teachers previously.

By year 3, students should already have the basic language-learning
tools they need to succeed in almost any class. They should know how
to use a dictionary, extract meaning from context, pick out salient
words, take risks in speaking, understand enough about tenses,
agreement, parts of speech, etc. to talk about grammar and identify
endings, even if they don't understand those endings, etc. This is
why, when designing assessments for language learners, I care more
about assessing these skills than I do about their actual proficiency,
which is going to fluctuate all their life anyway.

Hesitant learners will use the mixed environment as an excuse to NOT
apply these language-learning skills, so they need support. I tell
kids that it's not as if there's a level 3 France where they don't use
conditional sentences and a level 4 France where they avoid talking
about things in the subjunctive mood. It's about using what you know
to maximum effect, and using available resources to increase what you
know.

conversational classes at the Alliance Francaise here in DC. It is an excellent
place for adult learners.

Greetings....check out EduPlatform. It will allow you to create a single
lesson file (.epl) Where you can add any sort of digital resources , flash,
html, multimedia, Office, in fact any file that you have the software to
open, including Smart Notebook files Once the file i created it can be used
on a Smartboard for whole group instruction or may be distributed to
studnets computers using the included classroom manager. The interface's
design is touch friendly so it will work well.

I'm not exactly thrilled by Smart's revised ULA myself. We purchased Class=
matePC netbooks last year with the Smartsuite as part of their "ecosystem" =
included in the price. Now it appears that Smart's revised ULA would mean =
my teachers couldn't use the instructor side of the suite if connected to a=
projector. I'm looking for alternatives to Smart Notebook as well.

We're already using OneNote as a significant part of our curriculum. Altho=
ugh it doesn't allow for Flash and other interactive to be visually embedde=
d, the files can still be inserted and/or linked with the notebooks.

Fred, I absolutely agree with you that the dedicated board/software combo is
on its way out. With BrightLink projectors and Eno boards, it's clear that
good software coupled with *anything* that provides good interactivity
should win the day.

SMART prohibits the use of Notebook on "restricted" products, which
basically amounts to anything interactive not made by them. They are,
though, making a web-based version of Notebook (Notebook Express --
http://express.smarttech.com) meant to work with non-SMART products.

RM Easiteach is a good alternative, and the next generation of that software
announced and shown off at ISTE looked really slick, certainly better than
what came bundled with our Enos and BrightLink.

focus on teaching the skills necessary to use Microsoft Office Suite (Word,
Excel and Powerpoint) for academic projects that they will encounter in
Middle School. Our school primarily uses Macs and our students rotate
through a series of classes over the course of the year with computers being
only one of those classes. That means that only a third of the students
have computers at any one time and the class meets daily for about 10 weeks.
Does anyone have such a curriculum already in place that they could share?
Is anyone aware of any products on the market that break down the skills
necessary for mastery of the Office applications that could be used as a
diagnostic tool to determine an individual student's prior understanding?

Good morning,

As we start the new school year, I was hoping to do a quick survey (happy t=
o share results if asked) about how schools with laptop programs prep new f=
aculty. I realize it's too late to help most of us for this school year, b=
ut as many of us have a handful of new faculty starting in the next few wee=
ks, it seemed a good idea to discuss while it's fresh so we can plan accord=
ingly for next summer.

Alternatives to SmartTech's Notebook software?

SmartTech has made it very clear that their license does not allow the use
of SmartTech software unless you are using their interactive whiteboards.

My experience with the Epson Brightlink leads me to believe that the days
of dedicated interactive whiteboards are numbered.

In my opinion SmartTech would get ahead of the curve if they licensed
their software separately from their hardware, but I don't see any sign of
this happening soon.

So, I'm starting the search for good alternatives to SmartTech's NoteBook
software.

I've looked at WizTeach (http://www.wizteach.com/) and RM Education's
interactive software
(http://www.rmeducation.com/shops/rmusa/Catalogue.aspx?nguid=888c6fe9-f9ae-4971-9d4a-95e140d2021f).

Are there other alternatives that people like?

Re: Global/Electronic Permission Slips

We do online registration each year and part of this process is =
electronic AUP and permission slip. The AUP is a Yes only choice (and =
they can't register unless they select Yes). The AUP also allows all =
use of school work and the student's picture for the website and school =
marketing materials. Parents are no longer allowed to opt out of using =
their student's pictures as this was a nightmare.

I am not sure how the field trip option works. I can email our database =
director who is the one who manages the online registration. I just =
know that parent never need to fill out any paperwork or pay for (as it =
is included in tuition) any day trips. This means teachers don't have =
to deal with any paperwork or money. Overnight trip costs are added to =
registration cost by grade, but there is paperwork for these overnight =
trips that teachers deal with.

I found it to be an all or non proposition, and also found the start page t=
o
not be very useful--if the administrator adds information to a start page,
it only shows up for new . I ended up creating a Google Sites landing page
that requires login and pointing our subdomain for our Google Apps to it.
The landing page just has links to the Google Apps services and some help
files.

By the way, we have found it very helpful to have a brand for our Google
Apps, which we call Aerie. It differentiates it from Gmail and other Google
services. If I tell a student I shared an Aerie doc with him, he knows he
can find it in his Aerie account, which is different from his personal Gmai=
l
account.

You cannot control what goes on the igoogle start page at present.

Many people disable the start page and have people sign in via a link to a
Google Sites page.

New ISENET group for users of CWRA, HSSSE, &/or MAP

Hello Everyone, Happy Summer.

As a strong proponent of using data, but more importantly, the right data
for our educational planning and decision-making, I was glad to see NAIS
publish recently a short article on "Student Outcomes that Measure the
School's Value Added.<http://www.nais.org/sustainable/article.cfm?ItemNumber=151607>

Three of the tools featured in the NAIS piece are the CWRA
<http://www.cae.org/content/pro_collegework.htm>(College and Work Readiness
Assessment), the HSSSE <http://ceep.indiana.edu/hssse/index.htm>(High School
Survey of Student Engagement), and the MAP
<http://www.nwea.org/products-services/computer-based-adaptive-assessments/map>(Measurement
of Academic Progress).

As it happens, we have begun or are beginning use of all three in the past
year at St. Gregory. As we do, though, I realize how much I wish I had a
group of colleagues from among my independent schools associates with and
from whom I can share ideas and learn. It is not enough just to collect
the data. The key is to think carefully how we use the results we get how
do we interpret, how do we communicate and broadcast them, and how do we see
that they influence pedagogical development at our schools.

So, for these very purposes, I have established a new group within the
isenet ning, with the straightforward name Schools using CWRA-HSSSE-MAP
Outcomes Measurements. It is available here:

anyone to join; although primarily intended for schools already using any or
all of these three tools, it certainly could be of value to those schools
considering their use in the future.

I have already loaded up four discussion groups: why schools are using CWRA
(a CWRA advocacy section, effectively); how schools are using CWRA results
to improve learning; how schools are both sharing HSSSE results and how they
are using the results for school improvement; and how schools are
administering MAP and using it for learning improvement. Of course, group
members may begin their own discussion topics inside the group.

Here's hoping the group membership will grow in the coming months and years:
I think these are really powerful tools, which can be much more powerful via
our collaboration.

Performance Evaluation Tools

I've been asked to evaluate the performance of one of our technology
department members. I'm used to doing teacher evaluations, but am not sure
what format this should take or what the important components are to
emphasize. Does anyone have a pre-existing form that they'd be willing to
share?
