That's the number of members of the Independent School Educators Network

All them interested in education, interested in exchanging ideas, and just
plain interesting.

Hi Renee,

You may already know this, but ActiveSync via Exhange has long not
support the distribution of Public Folders. However, it looks lie this
"new" tool might do what you're looking for.

Re: database solution for Summer Programs

Another plug for CampBrain. They're based in Canada. I've only called them once for support, and
the technician was able to help solve the problem in under a minute. It's Access-based, so no
need for a big SQL server (good or bad, depending on your perspective) and you can just drop the
installer in a shared network folder.

Exchange 2003 Public Folder Sync Phones

Does anyone know any workarounds to get public folders to be visible on
phones? We are still using Exchange 2003. I set up public folders that
I want to try rather than distribution lists. However, the dozen or so
users that check mail on their phones (iphone, blackberry, and a few
others), can only get to the public folders by using the OWA interface
which is really hard to use on a small phone device!

Google Apps Admin Tools - Sharing Group Email Addresses

Just a quick head's up that I added the ability to manage shared contacts to
our Google Apps Admin Tools
<https://webapps.peddie.org/GoogleAppsAdmin>page which we have made
available to any Google Apps school or non-profit
upon request.

While generally a very positive thing, when Google Apps migrated from
mailing lists to full fledged Google Groups a very annoying by-product was
that domain groups stopped being shared to the domain so our users lost
type-ahead ability for groups. The official solution to this problem is to
create a shared contact (click
here<http://code.google.com/googleapps/faq.html#shared_contacts>for
Google's description of contact types) for each group you want to
share.
The problem is that the standard admin console doesn't provide the ability
to manage shared contacts, you have to use the API. Since I already had to
learn the API (see my original below) I decided to just add the ability to
manage shared contacts to our custom admin page rather than pay for a third
party tool or use a tool still in beta.

As explained below in my original email, any school or non-profit is welcome
to use my site, just send me an email with your Google Apps domain and I'll
add your school to the list of authorized domains. Note that the site does a
few other useful things which still can't be done using the stock admin
console such as change a username. Again, please read my original message
below.

==========

ORIGINAL EMAIL SEND DECEMBER 2009

We migrated to Google Apps back in September 2008 and there are a lot of
great things about Google Apps, but one thing we found lacking was the stock
administrator tools. While Google has improved the stock admin tools
significantly since Sept 2008, they still are lacking in a number of ways.
To fill in the gap I used the Google API to create a site to supplement the
stock admin tools. Our site currently does the following:

- Allows you to change a username (e.g. due to marriage). The stock tools
allow you to change the display name, but not the username.
- While the stock tools allow small domains to export a user list as a
CSV, this option does not seem to be available for larger domains (at least
not our domain), and even for small domains you can't export group
membership information. Our site allows you to export all users, and if you
don't mind waiting 5 minutes for the export to complete, you can also export
all group memberships for each user.
- We still find the group management tools cumbersome, so I built a page
dedicated to managing groups making adding/deleting/modifying members in
groups as easy as pasting email addresses into a test box.

Since all Google Apps domains use the same API, it was possible to add the
functionality to this site to allow it to be used to manage any Google Apps
domain; therefore, I decided to open it up for any school or non-profit use.
If you administer a Google Apps domain for a school or non-profit and would
like to use this site, please send me an email (tphelan@peddie.org) or give
me a call (609-944-7625) requesting that I add your domain to the list of
allowed domains. Please do not send me your administrator password. While we
use this site to manage the Peddie domain and I know of no bugs, no warranty
is expressed or implied. Also, please do read the instructions at the bottom
of each page before using the page.

The URL for the site which includes more information about the site is:

Re: Consolidated auto-reply omit mailling lists howto page?

Maybe I am confused, but the only way I know how to stop them from =
coming is to put the specific listserv in the rules when setting an out =
of office message. I am sure many of you are like me, and belong to =
several (sometimes dozens) of listservs. It seems pretty time consuming =
to have to copy and paste all the addresses to the dozens of listservs =
in my out of office setup. =20

I rarely use the out of office, as even when I am on vacation, I am =
usually check my mail daily. However, the couple of times I did use it, =
I made sure I checked the "only once per sender" option. It seems to =
me, it is much less time consuming to click the delete key on the few =
out of office emails we get, then to have all of us have to set up the =
rules for all the listservs we belong to.

Or...am I missing an easy way to do this?

Wow! A fellow Marylander from the final resting place of Tallulah
Bankhead in beautiful Chestertown!

I've been using Amanda. They support off site storage with Amazon Web
Services as the storage service. I've been using it trouble free for years
at very low cost.

Amanda is also a Marylander! Stands for Advanced Maryland Automatic
Network Disk Archiver and was conceived at the University of Maryland.
They have a sweet frontend and it's called Zmanda - otherwise it's free and
open source software.

Please let me know if you need any additional info.

Fujitsu tablets and Windows 7 pen issues

We just discovered a glitch with all of our models of Fujitsu tablets with =
Wacom pens, running Windows 7. When a computer goes into sleep mode, the p=
en no longer works when the computer wakes. The capacitive touch screen wo=
rks, as does the touch pad. A reboot resolves the issue--until the compute=
r goes to sleep again. Has anyone seen this behavior with their systems? =
If so, I would love to hear from you and your ideas on how you solved the p=
roblem.

Thanks,

Carl,
Though I have never used Websense, Brookwood has been using Barracuda for
many years. Though the initial price is expensive we have gotten many
years use out of our Barracuda Spam and virus filter. We do not use it
for filtering web content though for our students.

Having said that, I am exceptionally happy with our Barracuda 200 and will
be replacing it next year with an updated model. For whatever reason, our
school has come to the attention of one or more group of spammers and
malware writers. We have literally been under attack at times and
primarily through email attachments and tricks to get our users to click
links to malware sites. Our Barracuda has blocked nearly all of this spam
and nearly 100% of the malware attachments over the years. We have
received anywhere from 4000 - 8000 spam email a day and have been targeted
with spam campaigns. I *do* tweak the Barracuda myself with many modified
rules and additions and manage it every morning. But that is a plus
because I can. Enough said.....

We're thrilled with it and I couldn't imagine the problems I would be
dealing with if I didn't have it.

Re: Websense vs Baracuda web filter

Carl,

I can't comment directly on either Websense or Barracuda.

If you're not already part of a educational purchasing consortium, you might
try joining something like www.oetc.org to get a deeper discount on
Websense. 3x the price for a Barracuda seems like quite a premium to pay
unless you are really unhappy with your current system.

Re: open source fundraising and development software

You might want to take a look at CiviCRM - does quite a bit. We just
installed it for a local theater company and their director of
fundraising felt that it's on par with a lot of the really expensive
packages he's worked with...

Re: CS4 & large iMac

Just our experiences:

We have been running CS3 on newer and older iMacs (some First-Gen Intels).
It was really slow. We skipped CS4 and have now moved to CS5 and the
improvements are really noticeable. 4gigs of RAM is a must of course but
also because the same machines are also running iMovie, Final Cut and some
have Vectorworks, etc. 64 bit Adobe apps really makes a difference.

CS4 & large iMac

Hello list

We noticed toward the end of the year a the complexity of the
Illustrator or Photoshop projects increased the performance of our now
three year old iMacs decreased. I believe the issue is a lack of
actual video RAM. Last summer I bumped the ram to 4GB which helped but
isn't the cure.

Moving up to a new 27" unit with actual video RAM and a larger work
area is a logical solution. Before making this move I'd like any
feedback on CS4 and this current generation of iMacs.

thanks
