Re: SlingBox/Slingplayer in Schools - if we were allowed

A slingbox is a device which connect to the TV Cable in one location
and permit viewing of that cable on a computer in any location world
wide by means of the internet. They work great and it is quite amazing
to watch. There are also legal issues involved as it can destroy the
idea of location in broadcasting.

Take for example the BBC which restricts online viewing to the UK
only. If you have a slingbox connected to Cable or even an antenna in
the UK you can watch the BBC in any location. This is called
placeshifting see:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Placeshifting

Another concern I could see in schools, particularly boarding schools
is this give your students unfiltered access to cable television
beyond your control as the slingbox is sitting on a TV cable at some
distant location, their home for example.

On the other hand it could be very useful in teaching languages as you
could have a slingbox attached to the CBC French service in Quebec
and be able to have your students in Texas watch it.
