NETWORK MANAGER ~ Packer Collegiate Institute

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Network Manager is responsible for maintaining the technological
infrastructure of the school. This includes monitoring, maintaining and
upgrading all major components of the wired and wireless network
(switches, routers, access points, cable plant), the academic and
administrative servers, security and backup systems. Working closely with
the Director of Technology, the Network Manager supports and implements
the philosophy, policies, and procedures of the Packer IT Department. This
is a 12-month contract. The Network Manager is expected to be available to
work one week of each of the two week vacations annually. Weekend and
evening hours may be required for special projects and emergencies.

SUPERVISOR: Director of Technology

SUPERVISES: n/a, but may be asked to lead technical support staff and
students for certain technical projects and technical support operations,
providing supervision in those circumstances

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Engineering or
equivalent experience

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Monitor and report regularly on health of network, servers, security,
backups, Internet service
• Install, maintain, and upgrade technology infrastructure
• Research and recommend infrastructure improvements
• Install, maintain, upgrade, and manage administrative databases and
related software
• Manage FirstClass e-mail system
• Assist with network planning, design, and implementation
• Manage firewall and network security
• Monitor and manage network bandwidth usage and policy
• Manage Windows domain including user and computer policies
• Work on special projects as requested by Director of Technology
• Assist Director of Technology in communication of policies and
procedures to end users
• Assist Director of Technology with training of administrative staff on
administrative applications
• Collaborate with Director of Technology to create Disaster Recovery Plan
• Serve, with Director of Technology, as technical contact to vendors when
necessary
• Assist IT Department technical support staff as needed and work as a
member of the IT team

SKILLS and ABILITIES:
• Strong management and organizational skills
• Excellent communication skills in speaking and writing
• Ability to work collaboratively with members of the IT Department
• Ability to produce clear and detailed documentation of systems,
policies, and processes
• Ability to produce regular reports describing the status of major systems
• Excellent problem-solving skills
• Customer-service approach to working with end-users
• Experience with a variety of server OS: Window 2000/03, OS X, Unix
• Experience with Mac and Win workstations
• Experience with networking in a cross-platform, laptop program,
educational environment
• Experience with security, filtering, bandwidth management, and security
software
• Experience with Cisco switches, routers, firewalls, and IP phones
* Scripting Experience preferred (Unix, VBScript)
