Symantec Backup Exec - pair that with being non-profit and a school, we were
able to receive some pretty hefty discounts through cdwg. Their phone
support was able to easily get me up and running and even helped us plan out
our backup schedule. Even after the install was completely configured and
up and running they stayed on the phone to answer every one of my questions
about future recovery if needed.
So far, I have had only two issues with EMC Retrospect. One is, for some
reason that I have yet to figure out, every once in a while our external
hard drive disappears. No matter what you do you cannot get windows to
recognize it again until you restart. I researched and digged until I found
a little program that scans your usb ports, and when it does, it actually
resets them. Our backup runs at 10pm every night so I have this nifty
program start and close every night at 9pm. It isn't the most elegant
solution, and I'm sure it isn't what the programmers created it for, but it
works and its free. If you have this problem let me know and I'll share it
with you.
The second problem we ran into was Retrospect does not copy files that are
in use. Fortunately, this isn't a big issue for us except for a few cases.
If this is a huge issue, EMC sells an add-on module that takes care of that
and I don't think its too excessive (even though it should be standard). I
got around this issue by having one of our databases backed up every night
around 9pm using windows backup task which creates a backup file, which
in-turn gets backed up by EMC naturally. Again, not elegant, but free and
it works.
