session next Tuesday so that we would be able to watch the President's
address with our students. I don't know if we would have required all to
watch the event, but we may well have done so. As stated, this sort of
event allows students to formulate opinions, to discuss their various
positions and to engage in debate--an essential skill to develop. I think
that I would have been inclined to require our students to watch the
speech precisely because it will address an experience so different from
their own. It is important for students in independent schools to
understand just how rare their educational life is.
