l Hours) that is required for our middle schoolers who can't get picked-=
up right after school, aren't involved in one of our Afternoon Programs =
(sports, yearbook, etc), or are on campus for any reason. In MASH, stud=
ents may play board games, visit with friends, do homework, read, etc. (=
we use two rooms, one is a quiet room). We don't charge extra for those=
who use this service. Because family and student schedules are so vari=
able, we don't take attendance - we ask parents to understand and suppor=
t our expectations and take responsibility for their children's after sc=
hool plans. Of course, there are occasional misunderstandings and probl=
ems but for the most part, it works! =20

We are a coeducational day/boarding school for 440 students in grades 5-=
12
in Wheeling, WV. We charge nothing for after school care / supervision.
Students generally collect in the school's main point of entry or in the
library nearby. Some students stay up to three hours after the school da=
y
ends. Several day students each week actually join boarding students for
dinner.=20
We are growing increasingly concerned about the absence of accountabilit=
y
and controls on our students' coming and going. Particularly worrisome a=

the implications of this void for younger students.=20
Yet, solving the problem has been difficult. How do schools keep track o=

where students should be, then hold them accountable for being there=3F =
Take
just one 6th grade student who has piano lessons off campus immediately
after school on Monday, then goes to soccer practice on campus on Tuesda=

then hangs out in the school building on Wednesday and Thursday, then ge=

picked up by her grandmother on Friday. This is one child of a few hundr=
ed.
We return to the fundamental question--is the goal to keep all children
accounted for each day from the moment school ends until they are safely
home=3F Is the goal to keep the school building quiet and safe=3F We cou=
ld use
some blueprints that offer logistical solutions to these challenges. We
seem to be in no short supply of good ideas, but action plans involving
their execution always seem to present snags.=20
