students, in grades 4-6, measure the circumference and diameter of round
objects and then do the division to determine Pi. These activities comes
from a series of workbooks on Pi and the website www.piday.org. Afterwards
we have a Pi recitation contest, Pi poems and songs (YouTube has great
stuff), and finally the Pi Eating Contest (think whipped cream and paper
plates). We also have a round cake in honor of Einstein's birthday, which
of course we measure before we light the candles (3.14) and eat. One of our
5th grade teachers also does a special Pi Day celebration in her classroom
with related math activities.

Any math teachers out there do anything special for PI day which is coming
up in a few days?
At The Children's Storefront in Harlem, all the kids are familiar with
this video/song
http://www.thechildrensstorefront.org/pi/PiVideoStrMed.mov
and compete in a contest in each grade to memorize places of PI and win a
PIE on Monday!
I would love to connect with math teachers across the country/world doing
similar things and perhaps do something from school to school via SKYPE...
Steve
p.s. I also attended a math workshop at TEDx the other day in NYC that was
one of the best math workshops I have seen on "the 21st Century approach
to teaching math" in the last 33 years
