Re: School Websites

Hi Beth
At Sanford School, we are a co-ed day school with a little over 600
students.

1. Our part-time webmaster donated his time and redesigned our site. It was
a year long process. He ran a web committee to work through the redesign,
created samples to review, and came up the final configuration. It cost us
$0 but I know it would have cost thousands of dollars to have this done
commercially. The process really made us think about things and was very
constructive.

2. The webmaster coded the site. I can give you contact info off listserv,
if you want details of packages and languages used in the creation.

3. Yes, if I could. We got much more flexibility than with commercial
products. It's not perfect but it worked for us.

4. Updates are now handled with an online request form. Big changes, such as
adding sections, pages or major items, must be approved by appropriate
people, and then the webmaster makes the changes. Sections of the website
are updated by certain individuals without the approval process. For
example, the splash page slide show is handled by our admission dept.
directly, and our message box (we call it the blue box) is changes by the
director of communications.

5. Costs for us are low. Our website hosting is outsourced so we have no
server expense and costs are about $500/yr. I don't know the webmaster
expense but we only pay him for 4 hrs. per week and there are no benefit
expenses, but he is an alum who donates a lot of his time.
