Re: Library vs. Technology Staff Roles

Joe,
Here are the answers for what happens at Rutgers Prep.
Technology and Library in the 21st Century -- Defining Roles

*Who teaches research skills and tools?
Librarians teach skills and tools including databases and some equipment
like cameras and LCD projectors.

Who works with the teachers when students are doing research projects?
The librarians work with the students. I also teach Freshman Research class
that each student has one in a seven-day cycle.

*Who make decisions on software purchases? Hardware purchases?
IT head decides. A portion of the tech budget is set aside for the library
and I make the purchases that include library management/circulation
software, scanners, cameras for loan, etc.

Do you have separate budgets?
Yes, we do. And as indicated, the library uses some of the tech budget.

Who manages online subscriptions? Who trains people in their use?
The librarians manage the online subscriptions and trains teachers and
students. Tech helps out if we have technical issues.

Do you have a common place for teachers and librarians to put up their web
links? We use MOODLE most of the time.

Are you physically near each other or easily able to communicate with one
another? Indeed! He and I share an ofice.

Do you have a Technology Committee and/or a Curriculum Technology
Committee that meets regularly?

*Who purchases digital A-V equipment (including projectors and interactive
whiteboards, but not including computers)? The library buys cameras and
associated electronics, tripods, etc. The library also has iPods and a
Kindle. (We try to have e versions of books for students with different
learning styles.) Tech buys the LCD's and white boards. The library
barcodes everything that isn't permanently installed and checks those items
out through the library circulation system. That allows us to track every
cord, charger, battery, etc. A bit tedious at the front end, but a sure way
to know where things are---most of the time ; )

Who trains students/teachers in the use of those devices? We all do. Tech
also does a series of Tech Talks--short about 15 minutes-- to explain how to
use a specific item, how to bookmark in delicious, show a neat website, hoe

*Who loans it out? The library does.
