Open Source Media Gallery Software

We have tried a lot of different things to enable faculty, coaches, etc. to
post video and other media but have never been satisfied with the results.
We've tried everything from the very KISS method of simply providing a
network share, to setting up RSS feeds which tied into Windows media
services, to the new Google Apps video app, not to mention a bunch of
different services.

Every method we have tried has had significant drawbacks until we discovered
Gallery Server Pro <http://www.galleryserverpro.com/>. Gallery Server is an
Open Source ASP/C#/SQL Server web application that can tie into Active
Director for authentication.

If you are struggling to find a way to allow users to post their own content
without your help regardless of format, take a look at this product. Some
benefits off the top of my head...

- Currently it supports 138 media types.
- Uploading and managing content couldn't be easier.
- Admin has a lot of control regarding what functionality to allow. You
can do everything from pretty much limiting to only viewing or you can
provide a way to download an entire gallery (e.g. of photos) as a single zip
file.
- Supports multiple players.
- Store media in a folder structure that matches the online gallery
making backup and management very simple. You can also bypass the web site
and just dump a bunch of files directly into one of the gallery folders and
then do a sync to publish.
- Allows linking from other sources (e.g. YouTube) directly next to your
own content making the experience seamless for visitors.

We just got our server up and running and will be piloting it for the
remainder of the year. Feel free to take a look at
http://mediagallery.peddie.org/. The Ivano Viola album has some sample video
(Ivano found and setup the site).
